Things to Consider when you're Pregnant.

Obstetrician:
An obstetrician specializes in all aspects of pregnancy, labour, delivery and care after birth. If you are considered high-risk, then it is expected that you will seek out to an ob-gyn. Usually after finding out the good news you will be seeing your family doctor for prenatal care. Family doctor will then refer you to an ob-gyn starting approximately the 20th week. Most hospitals have a group of ob-gyn’s with the guarantee that one of them will be available at all time at the hospital. However, you will not have the option to choose the gender of the ob-gyn. If that is a concern then alternate arrangements will need to be made prior to the referral to the group.

Family Doctor:
Family physicians can offer regular medical checkups and pregnancy, post-pregnancy and pediatric care for yourself and your family. However, once you are around 20 weeks, it is likely that you would be referred to an ob-gyn for specialized care.

Midwife:
Although, an ob-gyn is specialized in pregnancy and the related aspects; due to their busy schedule it is unlikely that you will get a great deal of personal time. For this reason some women choose midwives as an alternate option. Midwives provide pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum care for low risk pregnancies. They attend births in hospital, birth centres and at home. The only downfall is that midwives are not licensed in all provinces.
