smoking while pregnant?


Smoking during pregnancy is a serious concern. Approximately 20% to 30% of the people use tobacco during pregnancy. Some quit the use of tobacco during pregnancy while some reduce the usage. Smoking increases complications and may lead to low birth weight, still births, miscarriages, reduced fetal growth, premature births, placental abruption etc. Low birth may cause illness and disability. Children born to mothers who were smoking during pregnancy are smaller at birth and are prone to asthma, infections, cold, coughs and other illnesses.  It may also lead to learning deficiencies.

The harmful ingredients found in cigarettes such as nicotine, carbon monoxide etc. are passed to the fetus through the placenta and effects the baby’s growth and other functions. For instance, nicotine raises the baby’s heart rate and breathing. Harmful effect of smoking on the unborn baby increases you progress in your pregnancy.
