Things to Consider before conception


The following steps can be taken prior to conception to prevent and minimize any risks associated with pregnancy. However if you have already received confirmation for the good news, then you can read the topics related to after pregnancy.
 Go for a checkup: you can see your family doctor or your gynecologist for a physical exam to identify any health problems and cure them in advance. You can also ask your doctor for pregnancy do’s and don’ts to get a head start.          
Dental checkup: It is important to keep your dental works up to date prior to conception since pregnancy hormones are known to create gum and tooth problems and may lead to pregnancy complications. It may be a good idea to get the routine x-rays ahead of time to limit x-rays and exposure to radiation after pregnancy.         
Your pregnancy history: If you have been pregnant before and faced complications, it is a good idea to consult your doctor to avoid similar complications.
Review your family history: review yours and your spouse’s family history to find out if there have been any medical or genetic problems in the past. This will allow you to ask the right questions and seek the necessary assistance.          

Check your immunization records: Ensure that it is up to date and if not, take the necessary shots. Some of the shots may need to be taken over a period of time and this will require you to postpone your pregnancy plans.          
Get illnesses under control: If you have illnesses such as high blood pressurediabetesheart problems etc. get them under control to ensure the well-being of your baby to be.         
 Look after your dietEating healthy food is beneficial for your health at all times but it is even more beneficial when trying to conceive. It is a good idea to reduce consuming junk food, fatty foods etc. while increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables etc. It is also a good idea to consume items that are high in folic acids as it will not only reduce premature birth and birth defects but also boost fertility.          
Start taking prenatal vitamins: Although you are looking after your diet and consuming foods that are high in folic acids, it is recommended to start taking prenatal vitamins three months prior to conception.          
Be fit: Being fit will ensure your well-being from the inside out whether or not you’re trying to become pregnant. When trying to become pregnant, a good exercise program will not only boost your spirit and energy but it will also strengthen your body for the challenging task of carrying and delivering a baby. This will also help you to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.          
Reduce your caffeine intake: Too much caffeine during pregnancy leads to lowered fertility, higher risk of miscarriage and still birth. The suggested amount caffeine intake is 200 mg or less. However, if you consume high amounts of caffeine, this may be a good time to control your in-take to get you started for pregnancy.          
Quit smoking: “Did you know that smoking can not only interfere with fertility but also cause your eggs to age? “ Smoking during pregnancy increases the chances of birth defects, premature birth, low birth weight etc. To avoid all this, it is a good idea to cut out the habit of smoking to ensure a healthy baby.        
Avoid alcohol and drugs: Consuming high amount of alcohol can hinder fertility. Once pregnant, it can cause birth defects, hearing/vision problems, premature birth, low birth weight etc. It is a good idea to cut down on alcohol while trying as you never know when conception will occur.          
Be financially ready: Having and raising baby can be very expensive and it us a good idea to evaluate your financial situation prior to becoming pregnant or having a baby to find out if you are financially ready to take on the responsibility. Based on that, you can budget your lifestyle to make room for a baby.          
Relax: Trying to become pregnant can be a daunting task especially when the good news takes forever to arrive. Also, focusing too much on becoming pregnant can be very stressful and frustrating. Hence, it is a good idea take some time to relax and take your mind off the thought of conceiving.          
Get out and enjoy with your spouse: Trying to become pregnant can be stressful and may lead you to neglect the significant other. Spending more time will also allow you and your spouse to be intimate and will help you with your plan of becoming a pregnant.          
Look for an obstetrician-gynecologist: Ask around to family, friends or co-workers who have recently been pregnant for their experience with their ob-gyn. Search online for reviews left by others to decide on an ob-gyn who will suit your needs.
